Ain't it funny
Aint it funny how a particular song, lyric, chord or opening few notes of a song can immediately transport you back to a particular place and time. And all the sudden you are in the past and can remember the exact way you felt at that time, maybe what you were wearing, the smells, the sights, the tastes. This has happened to me twice in the past 24 hours.
Last night when Unwritten Law played Cailin, I was transported back to a hot night in August 2000. I know what was going on and how I felt, but I'd like to keep that all to myself if you don't mind. Some things need to remain precious, sweet and secret.
The second time this happened was tonight when Steph and I finished our bottle of wine and she was telling me all the cd's she bought for family members for Christmas. One was Mark Knophler (sp?) from Dire Straight and I brought up how she once told me she didn't know the song "Romeo and Juliet", so I decided to go on a quest for it, b/c I believe that everyone should know that song. It's so beautiful. Well, I found it. I knew exactly what I was looking for. In my mass pile of cd's, it would be a hot pink cd with blue marker writing on it. I made it in 1998. I put it on and was transported back to dorm rooms, smokey cars, and cruising to Perkins with Katie and Keri.
To give you just a little taste of a typical ride with us at this time, the tracklisting on this cd:
1. Independent Love Song
2. BNL- One Week
3. Closer to Fine
4. Leaving on Jet Plane
5. Prince- Kiss
6. Indigo Girls- Gallileo
7. Indigo Girls- Romeo and Juliet
8. Prince- Seven
9. "If I could hold you tonight..."
10. Don McLean- American Pie
11. Phish- Bouncin' 'Round the room
12. More Indigo Girls
13. Ani Difranco- Untouchable Face
Wow, those songs bring back a hella lot of memories. Especially Untouchable Face which was blasted and sang loudly whenever a friend had a problem with a stupid boy. And Romeo and Juliet, usually the Dire Straight version, which was always on the Juke Box at Angelo's to which we'd sing and twirl around. And considering this was usually around 2am, when we'd been drinking since 9pm, it was always a great, drunken time. And oh man, Piano Man! This was always sung and swayed to with whoever was left in Angelo's at closing time. Usually there was still many of us there. Good times. These songs bring back so much nostalgia, I miss and long for those moments again sometimes. If I close my eyes and get lost in the songs, I once again feel like I am back in those times, being a teenager, without a care in the world, surrounded by my friends... twirling and singing...
